Each time Lewis and Clark came upon a new native American tribe, they would perform a special ceremony. They would start out the ceremony by telling the natives that their land now belongs to the United States. Also, they would tell them that Thomas Jefferson was their new "great father." Then, they would give the natives a peace medal, with the head of Jefferson on one side and clasped hands on the other side. Also, they would give the natives more presents, usually trade goods. Lastly, the members of the Corps would perform some kind of a parade; they would
