When the Corps came upon the Teton Sioux tribe, they stayed with them in their villages, one on the Mississippi River and the other on the Bad River. These spots are in present day Pierre, South Dakota. When the Corps first met them, they performed the meeting ceremony, which did not impress the tribe. They saw the Corps as a threat, and an armed fight almost broke out, stopped by the Teton chief Black Buffalo. The two groups could not communicate very effectively because of their very different languages, so there were many misunderstandings and more armed fights almost broke out. The Corps stayed with the tribe for three days during their trip to the Pacific Ocean; they left right after another armed conflict almost broke out.
