White Cliffs
White Cliff Mountains, Missouri.
On May 31, 1805 Lewis and Clark discovered the White Cliffs among the Judith River. Lewis described this area as, "The hills and river Clifts which we passed today exhibit a most romantic appearance. The bluffs of the river rise to the hight of from 2 to 300 feet and in most places nearly perpendicular; they are formed of remarkable white sandstone which is sufficiently soft to give way readily to the impression of water . . ." The White Cliffs are remarkable peices of sandstone that have eroded over time, forming the cliffs. The sandstone formations can be compared to ancient cities such as ancient Egypt and the Aztec. Today, they are the only discovery of Lewis and Clark that is unspoiled and protected.
