The Corps came upon the villages of the Yanton Sioux in August 1804. On August 29, 1804, Clark wrote, “The Scioues Camps are handsom of a Conic form Covered with Buffalow Roabs Painted different colours and all compact & handsomly arranged." He was describing the teepees in the Yankton Sioux village. On August 30, 1804, there was a council held between the tribe and the Corps, in which the Yankton Sioux asked for a reliable trade partner, rifles, ammunition, and possibly whiskey from the Americans. They received none of these things; instead they got an invitation to send a delegation to the capital of the United States, Washington D.C., to talk to Thomas Jefferson about trade.
